2001 Applicator review

Mar 15, 2001 12:00 PM

Take a look at the impressive lineup in this third, and last, part of our 2001 applicator review. Here are precision machines in self-propelled and pull-type categories that fit a wide range of needs. Get complete specs, options and other information by contacting the manufacturers or checking them out on the Internet.

Multipurpose Pre/Post

Choose from GM, Ford, Sterling and IHC versions of Stahly's newest Pre/Post models. The standard 1,300-gal. tank (1,000-and 2,000-gal. options available) and all product plumbing are corrosion-resistant 304 stainless steel. You can equip the rig with 385/85R 8-ply tires (rated for 55 mph) that straddle three 30-in. rows of 3-ft. corn, or with a flotation tire package. Six boom options, ranging from 55 to 85 ft. and adjustable to 42-in. height, feature tip breakaway and accumulator shocks. Tough 250- or 300-hp CAT engines power an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission rated at 950 ft.-lbs. torque. The cab is constructed of twin-sided galvanized steel, with enhanced corrosion and rust protection; the hood and fenders are fiberglass. Air conditioning, with added charcoal filtration; tinted glass; tilt wheel and air seat add to operator comfort. For more information, contact Stahly, Dept. Apply*, Box 1425, Bloomington, IL 61702, 800/678-2459, Web site: www.stahly.com.

Wider spread

A new design for spreading granular materials is available with Highway Equipment Company's New Leader G4 series fertilizer and lime spreaders. Models L3020G4 and L2020G4 are equipped with the firm's patent-pending variable rate broadcasters. Company tests show the new wider and more consistent design lets custom applicators cover more acres per day with an improved spread pattern. With the new design you also get a wider range of application rates and a simplified method of spread pattern testing and daily application. Both models are equipped with the new Mark IV.4 DGPS-ready ground speed control system, available with an optional spinner speed indicator that provides spinner speed readout from the cab. Application rates with the L3020G4 range from 75 lbs./acre of fertilizer to more than 6 tons/acre of lime; the L2020G4 spreads from 50 lbs./acre of fertilizer to 4 tons/acre of lime. Both come in painted carbon steel, painted 409 stainless steel or unpainted 304 stainless steel.

The new G4 series models replace the New Leader L3020GT and L2020GT models. For more information, contact Highway Equipment Co., Dept. Apply*, 616 D Ave. N.W., Cedar Rapids, IA 52405, 800/363-1771, Web site: www.highwayequipment.com.

Redball's new generation

Rudy Lusk, dealer representative for Ag Chem, says the Redball LLC products displayed at Farmfest — the model 670 trailer sprayer and the 1500 nurse trailer — are examples of the company's new design trends since its joint venture with Ag Chem. Most notable was the mushroom shape of the poly tanks and the trailer framing.

The 670 trailer sprayer, a new generation from the model 680, features an X-boom complete with a rubber torsion suspension system to provide a smooth ride with less bounce. A buyer can specify tank size (850 or 1,200 gal.), boom width (45 or 60 ft.), tires and axle widths. “You can custom fit these sprayers to fit your needs,” says Lusk. The units also offer speed compensation control with either a Raven 450 or TeeJet 844. Optional, too, is a chemical inductor.

Redball's nurse trailer has a 1,200-gal. tank along with an optional chemical inductor and fender storage racks. Buyers can choose either 15,000- or 20,000-lb. tandem axle capacity with brakes. There is room for the optional minibulk container on the front of the unit, and a choice of either a 2- or 3-in. transfer system. Contact Redball LLC, Dept. Apply*, 140 30th Ave. S.E., Benson, MN 56215, 877/332-2551, Web site: www.redballproducts.com.

No-till spraying

Hardi claims that its new Commander 1200 120-ft. Force sprayer combines the best of Danish and American technology to deliver optimum spraying flexibility, strength and durability for high-speed, no-till spraying.

The sprayer's cushioned ride is provided by the adjustable, parallel-link arm suspensions with the company's trapeze self-stabilizing feature, where trapeze arms, coil springs and shock absorbers work in concert. By adjusting the coil spring tension and positioning the trapeze and the lower link arms, the operator can fine-tune boom performance to different field conditions and spraying speeds. A hydraulic cylinder mounted on the center section, together with a hydraulic flow valve, makes it possible to easily adjust the vertical boom dampening effect.

The units come with a fixed, 120-in. suspended single axle, which the manufacturer claims allows for increased spraying capacity through higher field speeds and reduced stress on the boom, chassis, tires and axles.

The tri-fold design makes it possible to maintain a “short trailer” from hitch point to axle, allowing for tight turns in the field. Contact Hardi Inc., Dept. Apply*, 1500 W. 76th St., Davenport, IA 52806, 319/386-1730.

Fast, large-acreage sprayer

Cover up to 60 acres/hr. with Bestway's Field-Pro III-1000 sprayer. The machine has a 60-ft. boom and 1,000-gal. tank.

The new sprayer has two options for axle width. The narrow version slides from 8 to 10 ft., and the wide version slides from 10 to 12 ft. Radial tires spread the weight of the unit over a narrow, 31-in.-long footprint to help limit compaction.

The price of the 1000 is $25,000. Leases are available. Contact RHS Inc., Dept. Apply*, Box 394, Hiawatha, KS 66434, 800/247-3808, Web site: www.rhs-inc.com.

Efficient sidedressing

Easily sidedress nitrogen with the new nutri-placer 2800-16 from DMI. The liquid fertilizer applicator handles from 12 to 16, 30-in. rows with either a liquid coulter knife or liquid injector. The low-maintenance applicator allows you to apply fertilizer where and when it is needed. A hydraulic system provides the down pressure to keep the coulter in the ground at the desired depth across the entire applicator. The unit allows a wing flex of 6° down and 30° up. Full list price for the 16-row model is $23,400. Contact DMI, Dept. Apply*, Box 65, Goodfield, IL 61742-0065, 309/965-2233, Web site: www.dmifarm.com.

Nurse trailer

Wylie's new 1,250-gal. LT-1250 NTS nurse trailer features an elliptical polyethylene leg tank with a side-mounted fill well for easy access.

A variety of options are available for a variety of applications. Options include either a 15-gal. or new 30-gal. mix-n-fill system, a quick-fill valve and coupling. Other available features include walkway fenders with a handrail for safe access to the fill well, lights and a 25/16-in. ball hitch. Either Honda or Briggs & Stratton engines coupled to polyethylene or cast iron pumps can power the trailer. Suggested list price starts at $4,440. Contact Wylie Mfg. Co., Dept. Apply*, Box 100, Petersburg, TX 79250, 800/722-4001.
