Applicator review: 2001 Feb 15, 2001 12:00 PM Ron Ross Faster, more clearance The Apache Plus 890 becomes the big brother in Equipment Technologies' self-propelled Apache sprayer line. The bigger, faster rig was designed for custom applicators who want a higher crop clearance and more zip between jobs. The new Apache Plus, with its 6-cyl., 200- hp Cummins diesel engine, gets over more acres between fillings with its 850-gal. tank, compared to 750 gal. on the Apache 760. Booms clear 42-in. crop height. A choice of 120- to 140-in. adjustable or 72- to 90-in. fixed-length axles carry 60- to 100-ft. booms over varying row widths, steep slopes or soft fields with ease. The Hydra-Glide six-speed transmission combines the feel of hydrostatic with the ruggedness of mechanical controls. A 35-mph top road speed reduces field-to-field downtime. All Apache sprayers feature John Deere cabs. Price: drop box model with fixed-axle option, $116,026; non-drop box model with adjustable-axle option, $101,695. Nitro power Miller-St. Nazianz adds torque and horsepower to the Nitro self-propelled sprayer stable. Heavy-duty MS-18 wheel motors boost torque 66%, while tandem Sudstrand pumps pack 52% greater output into the model 200HT hydrostatic drive, compared with other Nitro sprayers. An electronically controlled 275-hp Cummins engine powers the new Nitro model 275, featuring onboard computerized diagnostics and advanced safety and shutdown features. Operators enjoy rapid response and maneuverability from the front-mounted Nitro boom system, which also fits corn detasselers, swathers and other front-mounted headers. A patented Air-Flex suspension system combines nitrogen gas accumulators with leveling linkage to soften rough terrain, center pivot tracks or terraces. The Nitro's narrow offset leg profile provides a 6-ft. clear span over-the-top for full-season application flexibility. The manufacturer has also added the Silver Wheels brand of floater and row crop applicators featuring the CenterRide truck chassis to its product line. Price: model 200HT, $159,999 list; model 275, $175,000 list. Contact Miller-St. Nazianz Inc., 511 E. Best of both Hagie Manufacturing says the new model 284xp self-propelled sprayer is a hybrid of the company's models 284 and 2100. Mechanically resembling the 284 with its 5.9-liter turbo Cummins and Sauer-Danfoss and Fairfield hydrostatic drive components, it borrows the 2100's four-wheel independent air-ride suspension for improved performance and operator comfort. Sensors automatically adjust each leg's air bag pressure for various load conditions. Hagie's Live Air 20-gal. foam marker system and a 55-gal. rinse system are standard. The medium-size sprayer features an 800-gal. solutions system. Price: about $100,000. Contact Hagie Manufacturing Co., Box 273, Clarion, IA 50525, 515/532-3553, or circle 408. Double-duty time-saver GVM claims the widest and most accurate pattern available with the new spinner and funnel divider system on the Double Duty (DD) spreader. You can cut costs and lessen compaction by programming two different jobs into the onboard Raven 210 computer system, or hook into a DGPS controller to apply variable rates. Spinner speeds are automatically controlled within 1 to 3%. The spreader places most granulated fertilizer into 85- to 105-ft. patterns at 15% (COV) and most limes up to a 60-ft. pattern. A 304 stainless steel hopper and new 34-in. belt- over-chain conveyor are protected by an inverted removable V-shield to keep weight off the belt and minimize lime bridging. Adjust the 42-gal. PWM hydraulic system for fertilizer rates starting at 100 lbs./acre and lime up to 3 tons/acre at 12 mph. Standard equipment includes a lime and fertilizer adjustable funnel with hillside divider. Price: $25,000 (all 304 S.S.). Contact GVM Inc., 374 Heidlersburg Rd., Biglerville, PA 17307, 800/345-3546. or circle 409. Check flow rates Experts say at least half of all sprayers would flunk a calibration test. The Redball spray tip tester quickly calculates the flow rate of each nozzle. A patented adapter cup fits over the spray tip and reads approximate flow in gallons per minute (gpm) from the scale. List price: about $40. For more information, contact Redball LLC, Dept. Apply, Box 159, Benson, MN 56215-0519, 877/332-2551, or circle 410 Another test: spray 10 acres and see if the correct number of gallons per acre was applied by checking the tank fluid level. Then check the spray pattern and monitor end use. agclick To see other application rigs available, check out this partial list of industry Web sites (in alphabetical order): Ag-Chem Equipment AGCO Ag-Gressor One Case IH Applicator Equipment GVM Hagie Manufacturing Company John Deere North America Mertz Miller-St. Nazianz New Holland Precision Tank and Equipment Co.
