Syngenta announces that new Touchdown Total herbicide with Low Foam Technology reduces foaming during mixing and tank fill. Low Foam Technology works by stabilizing antifoaming agents throughout the glyphosate herbicide. During tank fill, when foam can slow the spraying operation, retailers can expect less foam with the new technology, according to the company.
In a typical Touchdown formulation, water-based Touchdown and oil are mixed together causing the antifoam droplets to rise to the top, with no antifoam in the lower portions of bulk tanks. With the Low Foam Technology, the antifoam stays incorporated with the herbicide and rises very slowly through the herbicide, delaying separation for several months. The company says the result is an improved Touchdown Total formulation with low foaming as well as easier mixing and handling.
John Deere reports that field tests conducted in Brazil suggest that growers should increase gallons per acre and spray at higher pressures to ensure effective Asian soybean rust treatment.
The tests measured the effects of speed, gallonage, pressure, nozzle type, and other variables on coverage of the plant, particularly at the middle and bottom of the canopy where infections initiate.
The tests verified that penetrating the mature canopy and reaching lower leaves is difficult. Higher carrier volume and pressure can also make a difference. Field speed, however, had little effect on coverage. And because many experts say fungicides must be applied within two to three days after the first infection to protect yield, growers may want to consider increasing field speed to cover acres quickly once soybean rust is identified.
John Deere recommends the following: 1) Follow the upper end of label coverage recommendations. 2) Spray at slightly higher pressures. 3) Spray as fast as conditions allow.

New nozzles for treatment of Asian soybean rust
Spraying Systems Company says it designed its new Turbo TeeJet Duo and DG TwinJet spray nozzles to provide thorough plant coverage for effective treatment of Asian soybean rust.
Featuring a dual flat spray pattern, the Turbo TeeJet Duo (TT Duo) provides better canopy penetration and coverage than single flat spray nozzles do and produces larger droplets than other dual spray nozzles do for greater drift control, according to the company. The operating pressure range is 15 to 90 psi (1.03 to 6.21 bar), and a 60°, 90° or 120° included angle between spray patterns can be used depending on tip configuration. The DG TwinJet provides good leaf coverage and canopy penetration. The nozzle uses a pre-orifice in conjunction with a dual orifice to create two identical flat spray patterns with a 60° included spray angle between them. The nozzle produces finer droplets than the TT Duo does but larger droplets than standard twin-spray nozzles do to help minimize drift. DG TwinJet nozzles have an operating pressure range of 30 to 60 psi (2.07 to 4.14 bar).
Arrow herbicide
Makhteshim Agan of North America (MANA) introduces Arrow herbicide, the first generic clethodim, which can be used for eliminating the corn flushes that can't be controlled by glyphosate. In addition to volunteer Roundup Ready corn, Arrow controls all varieties of volunteer corn including other herbicide-tolerant types, LibertyLink and Clearfield, according to the company.
MANA states that Arrow offers clethodim's high efficacy at low rates and is an economical alternative to branded and private-label clethodim products. The product can be tank mixed with formulations of Roundup or glyphosate. It controls volunteer corn growth from 4 to 24 in. and taller, plus other stubborn annual and perennial grasses, according to the company.
New base genetics
Pioneer Hi-Bred International announces that for the 2005 growing season, corn producers will have access to new base genetics from 16 hybrid families. Pioneer combined these new base genetics with insect- and herbicide-resistance traits to advance a total of 40 new corn hybrids for 2005. The company states that this new collection of corn hybrids combines exceptional yield potential with solid agronomics, insect protection and herbicide resistance.
Of the 16 hybrids offering new base genetics, one white and 15 conventional hybrids have been advanced. This brings the 2005 Pioneer brand corn offerings to 290 products for North America.
