Agriliance names new director

Agriliance, St. Paul, MN, announces that James Jay Stouppe has joined the company's Supply and Logistics division as director of manufacturing. Stouppe will be responsible for management oversight and profitability of manufacturing plants in Hampton, IA, Blytheville, AR, and St. Joseph, MO, and will be based in St. Joseph.

Ignite is approved

Bayer CropScience, San Antonio, TX, has received federal registration for use of Ignite herbicide in cotton. Ignite is a non-selective, contact herbicide that controls more than 100 weeds in cotton. It will be used on LibertyLink cotton varieties.

New sunflower hybrids

Mycogen Seeds, Indianapolis, IN, announces the release of two new sunflower hybrids: 8D310, a mid-season NuSun hybrid, and 8C416, a standard-length confection hybrid. 8D310 has oleic oil values in the mid to high 70s that give it good acceptance in the NuSun crushing market. 8C416 is suited for “in-shell” markets and works well as a hulling confection, according to the company.

Starane accepted for weed control

Dow AgroSciences, Indianapolis, IN, announces that the EPA has accepted Starane herbicide for use in controlling broadleaf weeds in grain sorghum (milo) and field and sweet corn.

According to the company, Starane is particularly effective at controlling kochia as well as velvetleaf, cocklebur, sunflowers, ragweed, morningglory and bindweed. Under the accepted label, Starane will be helpful as a burndown application in no-till milo. It also can be used as an in-crop treatment in grain sorghum. For post applications, the product may be applied to field corn up to the V5 growth state and in sweet corn up to the V4 growth stage.

Letter to the Editor

I like Den Gardner's editorial in the January issue [“Small farms a new opportunity?” page 3]. I am one of these small farmers. I also sell seed corn, however on a very small scale. I have not had this happen to me, but I have heard when you sell to a large operation, they tell you what they will pay for goods and services. If you eliminate the small operation by charging them more than the large operator, you will only have large customers and they will tell you what their terms are or you don't do any business. I suggest giving the small operation larger breaks or the same breaks as the large operations if you want to stay in business. I have seen this in the apparel manufacturing business where my wife worked through two mergers, and after the merger you move to Mexico or you no longer work for them. Is agriculture next?
