Cotton crop protection manufacturers Mar 1, 2004 12:00 PM AMVAC Chemical Corporation New for 2004: Discipline 2EC insecticide controls a broad spectrum of primary and secondary insect pests on cotton. The active ingredient in Discipline is bifenthrin, used for many years to control yield-robbing insects in cotton. AMVAC says concerns about insect resistance make Discipline a particularly good fit in pest management programs for control of bollworms, cutworms, stink bugs, whiteflies and spider mites. The company says that supplies of the product should be adequate for the 2004 season and that it should be competitively priced with other pyrethroid products. Excited about: AMVAC states that its broad portfolio of cotton products, including Bidrin 8 insecticide, Folex 6 defoliant, PCNB fungicide, Dibrom 8 insecticide and K-Pam HL and Vapam HL soil fumigants are cost-effective tools that growers can use to increase yields and profits in 2004. Bayer CropScience New for 2004: Ignite herbicide received federal registration for use on cotton in November 2003. Ignite is applied postemergent to LibertyLink cotton based on the size of weeds, not the growth stage of the cotton. The herbicide also can be applied as a preplant burndown on all cotton types or as a hooded spray application on non-LibertyLink varieties. Dropp SC cotton defoliant is a new liquid formulation. Bayer CropScience will manufacture 100% Dropp SC in 2004. It replaces Dropp WP, a powder formulation. Dropp SC cotton defoliant should be applied to mature cotton plants when the last boll expected to harvest is mature. Excited about: Bayer CropScience is excited to offer Ignite herbicide and LibertyLink cotton. Growers will be able to apply Ignite directly over the top of LibertyLink cotton, controlling a broad spectrum of key grasses and broadleaf weeds. Growers will also have the opportunity to plant five LibertyLink cotton varieties from FiberMax cotton seed genetic lines. Dow AgroSciences New for 2004: Intrepid 2F, an insect growth regulator effective against many species of lepidopteran insects in cotton, received an approved label expansion that will allow its use in California cotton, beginning in 2004. Dow AgroSciences also has developed a new-generation pyrethroid, which will enter the market under the brand name Prolex. The company expects EPA registration in time for the product to be used in the 2004 growing season. Registration is also anticipated for WideStrike insect protection. Field trials under an Experimental Use Permit will continue in 2004 for the WideStrike insect protection trait. Upon registration, WideStrike, a combination of the Cry1F and Cry1Ac Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins, will be available to the market in elite varieties from PhytoGen Seed Company. Excited about: The company's product line includes Telone II nematicide for nematode control, Glyphomax Plus herbicide for weed and grass control, and a complete spectrum of insect control that includes Kelthane miticide, Tracer Naturalyte insect control, Intrepid insecticide and Lorsban-4E insecticide. In addition, new PhytoGen continues to expand its product line with the introduction of its first Roundup Ready varieties. Syngenta Crop Protection New for 2004: Syngenta describes Envoke as a broad-spectrum, postemergence herbicide that provides control of major broadleaf weeds and sedges at very low use rates. The active ingredient in Envoke is trifloxysulfuron sodium (TSS), an ALS inhibitor herbicide. Suprend is a broad-spectrum herbicide that provides contact and extended residual control of many common weeds and grasses in cotton. With registration anticipated for the 2004 season, Sequence herbicide will offer cotton growers effective burndown plus residual control of certain weeds, the company says. A combination of glyphosate and S-metolachlor, Sequence will control a broad spectrum of broadleaf weeds and grasses in both Roundup Ready and conventional cotton. Touchdown Total is a nonselective potassium glyphosate herbicide. Labeled for over-the-top use in Roundup Ready cotton and as a preemergent burndown treatment for both conventional and glyphosate-tolerant crop systems, Touchdown Total delivers broad-spectrum control of over 170 species of weeds and grasses. Excited about: Syngenta says that, with the addition of its new herbicides, its cotton portfolio better meets the demands of today's cotton producer by providing both selective and nonselective herbicides with a complete line of insecticides and fungicides. Valent U.S.A. Corporation New for 2004: Zeal miticide was recently registered as a reduce-risk pesticide for use on cotton. Valent says Zeal is a new chemistry with a unique mode of action that provides long-lasting control of spider mites. Valent claims Zeal is excellent for use in IPM/IRM programs because it is easy on beneficials and controls resistant mite populations. The company expects spring registration of Valor SX herbicide for use as a directed spray or lay-by application on cotton. It says Valor SX provides long-lasting weed control and allows flexible crop rotation. Excited about: Valent says it is excited about the launch of two new products that provide real solutions for the cotton grower: Zeal miticide and Valor SX herbicide. |
