CROPS Dec 1, 2004 12:00 PM EPA approves biopesticide The EPA has approved Sonata Biopesticide from AgraQuest, Davis, CA, for control of downy mildew, powdery mildew and rusts. Sonata is the fifth organic product AgraQuest has had approved within 12 months. AgraQuest says Sonata is the first biopesticide to provide 14-day mildew control. The company says the product underscores its commitment to providing sustainable, effective alternatives to chemical pesticides. Also pending at the EPA are AgraQuest's Arabesque Biofumigant and Virtuoso Bioinsecticide. EPA approves label for Storcide II Gustafson, Dallas, TX, announces that the EPA has granted the label for Storcide II insecticide. According to the company, Storcide II protects against a broad spectrum of insect pests, including the lesser grain borer. In addition, the active ingredients in Storcide II have Codex MRL (maximum residue limits) tolerances, so labeled crops protected with Storcide II may be shipped to international markets. Storcide II is a liquid grain protectant containing two active ingredients, chlorpyrifos-methyl (the active ingredient in Reldan stored grain insecticide) and deltamethrin. Storcide II will be offered as an all-in-one formulation designed for direct application to stored crops and seed. Storcide II also is approved for use as a bin protectant. Registration issued for Glyphomax XRT, Durango The EPA has issued federal registration for Dow AgroSciences' new high-load glyphosate formulation that will be marketed under the brand names Glyphomax XRT and Durango herbicides. These products contain a 5.4-lb. formulation of glyphosate and offer the convenience of more treated acres per gallon at a rate of 11/2 pints, or 24 oz./acre, as compared to the 4-lb. formulations currently on the market. Agrisure Advantage corn traits Syngenta, Golden Valley, MN, introduces Agrisure Advantage traits for herbicide tolerance and insect protection. The company claims that Agrisure Advantage features combinations that offer corn growers unsurpassed crop protection, management flexibility and yield potential. For 2005, Agrisure GT Advantage for glyphosate tolerance will be available in select hybrids offered by NK and Golden Harvest.Agrisure CB Advantage, for season-long protection against corn borer, will be available in select Garst hybrids. Syngenta plans to sell Agrisure Advantage traits with commercial germplasm through a broader range of foundation and independent seed companies so that growers will be able to purchase the initial traits and future offerings in the elite hybrids of their choice. |
