Field power Mar 15, 2003 12:00 PM All-terrain diesel The new Kawasaki Mule 3010 Diesel combines popular features of the gasoline-powered Mule 3010 with a diesel engine. The powerplant of the new utility vehicle is a liquid-cooled, 953cc, 3-cyl. diesel engine. The engine is matched to the Kawasaki Automatic Power-Drive System that features a 2-mm-thicker drive belt and revised cog shape for improved durability. When the operator chooses to be in 4-wd operation, a two-speed transfer case offers a lower gear ratio for extra pulling. The Mule 3010 Diesel can carry up to 1,100 lbs. in its steel cargo bed and can tow up to 1,200 lbs. It has a suggested retail price of $9,999 and comes standard with a 12-month, unlimited mileage warranty that can be extended up to three years. Contact Kawasaki Motors Corp. The new Traxter Max is equipped with a passenger seat and is built to handle the extra weight and stability needed for two riders. Previously, all ATVs, including Bombardier's, were recommended for single rider use only. The Canadian manufacturer says it designed the new four-wheeler to meet a growing need for a two-rider ATV. Customers told the company they wanted to be able to accommodate a passenger when driving to work sites. Comfort for two The new ATV features a 640-lb. weight capacity, more than enough for two riders and gear. The wheelbase is 10 in. longer than that of the standard Traxter and positions both riders in front of the rear axle for greater stability. Heavier preload springs have been added to handle the load. The suspension includes a single rear swing arm with dual shocks and straight axle. A step-up passenger seat with back support provides plenty of room for adult riders. Handholds and raised footboards help the passenger anticipate and respond to riding conditions. Bombardier's step-through design lets the driver get on and off the ATV without bothering the passenger. The vehicle still has ample storage space; it includes a rear rack, large front rack and weather-resistant cargo bin in the front. Four-wheel power The Max is powered with a 498cc, single-cylinder Rotax engine. A five-speed, thumb-shifting transmission with high and low range helps drive the machine through all types of terrain. The driver also may select automatic shifting by pushing a tab button on the left handlebar. The ATV is designed for high-torque pulling and is rated with a 1,100-lb. towing capacity. Dry weight of the ATV is 829 lbs. Manufacturer suggested retail price: $7,399. Toolcat by BobcatCombine a skid-steer loader with a utility vehicle (UV) and you get a Toolcat. Bobcat introduced the 5600 Toolcat as the first in its new line of equipment called “utility work machines,” which look like skid-steer loaders with UV beds on the back. The Toolcat offers considerably more versatility than a skid-steer loader. Equipped with a 44-hp Kubota engine, the vehicle features all-wheel steering and 4-wd. It maneuvers well in all conditions, from mud and snow to turf and grass. Its tight 17-ft. outside turn diameter still makes it highly maneuverable in confined areas. The new vehicle cruises at 18 mph with a two-speed hydrostatic drive system that can be shifted on the fly. The suspension system allows flex and axle oscillation to increase pushing force and aid implement performance. Customer feedback The Toolcat line represents three years of planning and development at the West Fargo, ND, company. Bobcat officials say they designed the unique vehicle after customers asked for a more versatile skid-steer loader that could handle several jobs, such as mowing, snow removal, ground leveling, lifting pallets, fencing, hauling supplies and carrying a passenger. They also wanted 4-wd and faster ground speeds. UV controls The Toolcat's cab has room for a passenger and features controls found in UVs, such as a speedometer, cruise control and steering wheel. In the back, the Toolcat's box will hold 2,000 lbs. and a 2-in. receiver hitch to pull a trailer. Price: $30,000. Contact Bobcat Co., 250 E. Executive classThe Honda FourTrax Rincon is a sporty 650cc model ATV that is just now coming into dealerships. Its unique design features SUV styling, flowing fenders and integrated headlights and taillights. Honda uses aluminum components in the vehicle's control arms, rear knuckles and wheels to keep the ATV's weight down to a mere 600 lbs. (dry weight). The liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine is fully automatic with a torque-sensing, limited-slip front differential and fully independent front and rear suspension. The Rincon has a switch-operated 2-wd/4-wd system called TraxLok. It clears 10.7 in. of ground. Contact American Honda Motor Co.
