SYNGENTA CROP Protection hosted two June field tours near Gilbert, IA, and Champaign, IL. Company seed treatment specialists, university experts and crop consultants discussed a range of topics, including the growing use of seed treatments, preparing for soybean aphids and managing farmer fears and expectations about Asian soybean rust.
Speakers discussed the benefits of Cruiser Maxx Pak, a combination of two separately registered products — Cruiser insecticide seed treatment and ApronMaxx fungicide seed treatment. Syngenta says, in 2004, 23% of soybean growers used a seed-applied fungicide and less than 1% used a seed-applied insecticide. The company projects that this year 15 to 20% of treated soybean seed will be with Cruiser Maxx Pak.
Many of presentations made at the event focused on why the new fungicide-insecticide combo is a good value for farmers. For example, customers who are now alert to the threat of soybean rust should also be aware that many native fungal pathogens such as Pythium, Rhizoctonia and Phytophthora may already be hurting stand count and reducing early plant vigor to the point of significantly reducing yields. For both soybeans and corn, early planting and early plant health are increasingly shown to be major contributing factors to top yield potential. Seed treatments that fight fungi and early-season insects can be a worthwhile investment, especially as the price of seed continues to increase.
Also, soybean aphids are poised to have a big year again, according to trap count data. Spraying aphids preventatively will merely kill beneficial predators and make the aphid situation worse. Aphid treatment requires vigilant scouting because the pest can reach threshold levels quickly, multiplying their numbers as much as 10 times in just seven days. Though primarily meant to protect against early-season soil insects, the systemic insecticide in Cruiser Maxx Pak can slow the aphid reproductive cycle, Syngenta says. While it won't stop aphids completely, it can buy your customer a few extra days to identify and treat an outbreak with an over-the-top spray product such as Warrior.
