Inoculant application system

Jul 1, 2005 12:00 PM

PIONEER HI-BRED International says silage producers can save time and wear and tear on their choppers by using its patented Appli-Pro Super Low Volume (SLV) inoculant application system.

The new system uses the Appli-Pro 2.5-liter bottles containing concentrated Pioneer brand inoculant and eliminates the need for a water tank. Air from a compressor and a small amount of water, which is added directly into the bottle of inoculant, delivers the inoculant solution. Water is applied at a rate of only 10 ml/ton.

Gene Gengelbach, Pioneer inoculant product marketing manager, says the company's intent in developing this system was to simplify inoculant application for its customers. A producer needs to simply add water to the bottle of inoculant, shake the bottle to solubilize the product and then screw the bottle into the applicator. Each applicator holds two bottles, which treat 250 tons of silage each.

Pioneer also offers a dechlorinator to allow a producer to use regular tap water to fill the bottles. Tap water contains chlorine, which kills the bacteria in the inoculant.
