MACA's Water Guardians Apr 1, 2004 12:00 PM Illinois Water Guardians Brandt Consolidated, Four ag retailers cooperated with the Springfield Area Watershed Resource Committee, Springfield City, Water, Light and Power, and Sangamon County Soil and Water Conservation District to implement best management practices to protect the water supply. The retailers and government agencies work together to ensure atrazine levels remain well below MCL for atrazine in both raw and finished water. Iowa Water Guardian Eldon C. Stutsman, Two employees are state-certified as Grade “A” Water System operators. Handling, mixing and loading are done via computer. Kansas Water Guardian Mid Kansas Coop Association, The co-op sends every agronomy employee to at least one outside training session annually. It uses aerials maps for each custom application order for proper field location and potential concerns. Michigan Water Guardian Wilbur-Ellis Company, The facility site layout was designed so that water drains into a clay-lined pond monitored for runoff. The pond was designed to maximize containment. When employees are working with growers on chemical injection, they use contained trailers and check valves to prevent backflow. Missouri Water Guardian Bartlett Grain Company, The company helped pioneer the MO-AG Clean Pesticide Recycling Program. It continues to be a recycling center and dealer participant in the program. The company works with local communities to establish two-pass applications to keep pesticides out of the water. Nebraska Water Guardian C. Dean Younts, associate professor, Biological Systems Engineering, Panhandle Research & Extension Center, Scottsbluff, NE Younts works extensively with producers and ag retailers to develop technology and management practices that conserve water (critical in area of extended drought). He has appointments in research and extension in the 11-county area of the Panhandle. South Dakota Water Guardian Agland Coop, The co-op uses zone mapping program, incorporating variable-rate technology to apply crop nutrients in correct amounts for various soil profiles. It annually asks the local fire department to review its emergency response plan, safety measures and emergency procedures. Wisconsin Water Guardian Greg's Feed & Seed, Mix-load pad and spray equipment are under cover to prevent rain from washing off chemicals and contaminating groundwater. The company segregates feed and seed operation from fertilizer and chemical location to avoid cross-contamination. |
