New weapon in herbicide arsenal

Feb 1, 2006 12:00 PM
By Lynn Grooms

THE INTRODUCTION of a new herbicide that can be used on rangeland, pastures, wildlife habitat areas and other non-cropland areas has sparked the interest of ag retailers. “It's not every day you see a new active ingredient coming out,” says Trent Raasch, crop specialist, Agriland FS, Casey, IA. “This will be a new weapon in our arsenal.” Agriland FS is a full-service cooperative with 16 locations serving southwest Iowa.

Raasch is referring to aminopyralid, the active ingredient in Dow AgroSciences' new Milestone liquid herbicide. The new herbicide, which received full registration in August 2005, provides control of several broadleaf weeds, including Canada, musk, bull and plumeless thistles; spotted, diffuse and Russian knapweeds; yellow starthistle; and tropical soda apple.

Jess Trotter, manager of Trotter Fertilizer, Arcadia, NE, says one of the advantages of Milestone will be the ability to get right up to water's edge to control weeds and the spread of weed seeds. Herbicides such as Tordon 22K and Stinger (Transline) have been used to control weeds in rangeland and pastures. But because they cannot be used near surface waters, they have limited long-term results.

Trotter notes that farmers will be able to safely apply Milestone along canal systems, irrigation ditches, creeks and other waterways that are common in his area. Trotter's 15 locations serve customers in 11 central Nebraska counties.

Raasch is looking forward to offering customers a herbicide with a new mode of action that can be used in pastures in the Agriland FS territory. Both musk and Canada thistles are problem weeds there. Area farmers have been using Grazon with good results, but Canada thistle has been getting tougher to control, Raasch says. According to Dow AgroSciences, there are no grazing or haying restrictions for any class of livestock, including beef cattle, lactating dairy cattle, sheep, goats or horses, with Milestone.

The new herbicide may be tank mixed with other herbicides, such as PastureGard, Remedy or Surmount herbicide, or with 2,4-D. Dow AgroSciences recommends that a nonionic adjuvant be used along with the herbicide if applied when weeds are mature.
