NH3 nurse tank data plates

Jul 1, 2006 12:00 PM

THE AGRIBUSINESS Association of Iowa (AAI) has provided updated information on how to keep NH3 nurse tanks in service if the tanks' ASME data plates are missing or illegible.

Dealerships need to recover at least three pieces of information from the data plate to get a plate reissued: tank manufacturer name, year of manufacture, and the tank's serial number.

In Illinois, the application must be sent to the Illinois State Fire Marshal Office of Boiler and Pressure Vessels Safety. The application must include a rub or digital photo of the data plate. An application also must be sent to the nurse tank's original manufacturer to determine if there is enough legible information to issue a new plate.

AAI reports that if both the state fire marshal's office and the manufacturer determine there is enough legible information to reissue a new plate, the tank owner must arrange to have the plates reattached by the nurse tank's original manufacturer. In Illinois, a representative from the state fire marshal's office also must be present to see the re-attachment of the data plate to the nurse tank. If this office determines there is not enough legible information to issue a new plate, it can order the tank to be taken out of service.

The Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association estimates the cost to visit a facility and reattach a data plate to be about $400 per day, plus travel expenses. If a data plate is missing or there is not enough legible information on the plate, a manufacturer will not reissue the new plate.
