Smith Flow Control, Erlanger, KY, has developed a locking device to help farmers and fertilizer suppliers prevent the theft of anhydrous ammonia from nurse storage tanks. Called the NH₃ Amo-Lock, the device is designed to fit the tank's withdrawal valve and provides a fail-safe method of securing the contents in a field, at a fertilizer dealer or on the road, according to the company.

Once installed, the Amo-Lock becomes integral with the valve and is easy to operate one-handed, even when wearing gloves, company officials say. The operating key can be removed only when the valve is fully closed — a safe condition. Because operation does not involve climbing up onto the tank to fit a cover or padlock, the risk of injury is reduced.
