Seed choices for 2005

Here's a look at the new hybrids and varieties the major seed companies will launch for the 2005 planting season.

Bo-Jac Seed Company

Entering its sixth decade of serving farmers, Bo-Jac Seed Company adds six hybrids to its lineup for 2005. Three non-GMO additions are 106 day — 3860; 113 day — 5222; and 113 day — 7527CL (Clearfield). One LibertyLink addition, 113 day — 7522LL, and two YieldGard/LibertyLink hybrids, 109 day — 9445 and 113 day — 9527, round out the new corn offerings. Bo-Jac Seed Company also has added varieties to its Maverick brand soybeans, which it has marketed since 1995. A new 3.4 maturity conventional 4343 replaces longtime favorite 9330. Three new Roundup Ready (RR) varieties are 2.6 maturity 4262RR; 3.1 maturity 4319RR; and 4.3 maturity 4430RR. All three are soybean cyst nematode resistant.

Croplan Genetics introduces 17 new corn hybrids for 2005, ranging in maturity from 82 to 117 days. Several of these hybrids will be YieldGard Plus hybrids, offering combined rootworm and corn borer control. Some of these products also have Roundup Ready (RR) or RR/Bt versions. Other new hybrids will be available with the Herculex I technology, which offers a broad spectrum of control over a variety of pests. All Croplan Genetics hybrids are treated with Cruiser Extreme Pak for extra early-season protection.

Croplan Genetics also will feature 36 new RR soybean varieties, ranging in maturity from Group 00 to Group V.

Dairyland Seed Company

Dairyland Seed introduces 14 new soybean varieties with Roundup Ready (RR) herbicide tolerance ranging in maturity from Group 0 to Group 4, two non-GMO products and three stacked trait RR/STS Group II and III soybean products. It also introduces 18 new corn hybrids: four hybrids with YieldGard corn borer tolerance, four RR hybrids and four conventional hybrids, four YieldGard Plus hybrids, and two YieldGard Corn Borer/RR stacked hybrids. Dairyland Seed also offers a complete line of elite alfalfa products, including HybriForce-400 and HybriForce-420/Wet, the world's first hybrid alfalfas.

Delta and Pine Land Company (D&PL) introduces three new cotton seed products and three new soybean seed products. The new cotton seed products are DP 432 RR, DP 434 RR (both early season and carrying the Roundup Ready gene) plus DP 488 BG/RR (mid to full season plus loaded with Bollgard and Roundup Ready) in a stacked gene configuration. The company says that DP 488 BG/RR has the potential for both high-quality fiber and high yield. The new soybean varieties from D&PL are DP 4546 RR, DP 6215 RR and DP 7870 RR, all commercially available with the Roundup Ready benefit.

Fielder's Choice Direct

Fielder's Choice Direct offers corn growers 26 new hybrids for the 2005 growing season, making a total of 116 hybrids for '05. Fielder's Choice also has broadened the array of available technology traits, including individual or stacked traits such as Roundup Ready, YieldGard Corn Borer, YieldGard Rootworm, Clearfield, LibertyLink and Herculex. In addition, 72 hybrids are available with Poncho seed-applied insecticide, and another 49 hybrids can be coated with Intellicoat Early Plant. The relative maturities of the Fielder's Choice lineup range from 80 to 118 RM. Nine new products are in the 94- to 105-RM group, and 14 are in the fuller-season 108 to 117 RM. For forage producers, Fielder's Choice offers five corn hybrids with NutriDense as well as seven alfalfa varieties.

Fontanelle Hybrids

For the 2005 season, Fontanelle introduces 15 new High Cycle brand corn hybrids: two YieldGard Corn Borer (YGCB), three Roundup Ready (RR)2; four YGCB/RR, four YieldGard Plus and two Herculex I hybrids. In addition, Fontanelle launches four conventional, one waxy and one white corn hybrids. The Fontanelle soybean lineup will include six new varieties. Pending registration approval, Fontanelle will be one of the first companies to launch RR alfalfa in the spring of 2005.

Garst Seed Company, which includes PSA Genetics, markets a full line of product and trait offerings across the United States. Garst offers 35 new corn hybrids for the 2005 growing season: seven Roundup Ready (RR) hybrids, four YieldGard Corn Rootworm hybrids, five YieldGard Corn Borer hybrids, three LibertyLink hybrids, eight YieldGard Corn Borer/RR stacked hybrids, two YieldGard Corn Rootworm/RR stacked hybrids, one YieldGard Corn Borer/IT hybrid, one YieldGard Corn Rootworm/IT hybrid and three non-trait hybrids. Garst is offering one new waxy hybrid. The company plans to offer additional hybrids with the YieldGard Plus technology for 2005.

Garst also offers 15 new soybean varieties: four RR varieties, one conventional soybean cyst nematode (SCN) variety, nine RR/SCN varieties and one RR/STS/N variety. Garst will also list the oil and protein content of its soybeans in catalogs and other literature.

Rounding out the company's new offerings are one brown midrib forage sorghum hybrid and one high-traffic-tolerant alfalfa variety.

Garst offers Poncho, a seed-applied insecticide, on select corn hybrids. The company also offers ProCoat seed treatment on a number of soybean varieties.

FS Seed states it has a long history of top yields and outstanding product performance, with yield advantages over competitive varieties. The new product lineup for FS Corn and FS HiSoy Soybeans has just been released. In the FS Corn product line, there are 13 new releases: FS 3585RR, FS 4264LL, FS 4475 YGCB, FS 4895 YGPL, FS 5435RR, FS 5614ND, FS 6324ND, 6584LL, FS 6445 YGPL, FS 6465 YGCB, FS 6584LL, FS 6735, FS 6914ND. In the FS HiSoy Soybean product line, there are 15 new releases: HS 1045, HS 1345, HS 2036, HS 2235, HS 2431, HS 2635, HS 2736, HS 3135, HS 3236, HS 3536, HS 3936, HS 4336, HS 4536, HS 4736, HS 5036. Hoegemeyer Hybrids

Hoegemeyer's latest 103-day hybrid is 2597, a tall hybrid with higher ear placement. This hybrid has yield response to water, fertility and population. The company describes 2633 as a 106-day hybrid with good fall stay green and best results with higher populations. Hoegemeyer reports that 1128W is its newest white grain hybrid with top end yields on highly productive environments. The company says 679Ll, its most recent LibertyLink hybrid, has solid roots and stalks. A few of Hoegemeyer's latest soybean varieties are 23RR, 267RR, 344NRS, 381RRS.

Kaltenberg Seeds

Kaltenberg Seeds introduces 22 new corn hybrids for 2005. Three hybrids incorporate YieldGard Corn Borer and YieldGard Rootworm technology. Eight new corn hybrids with LibertyLink and Herculex technology will fit well with the company's direction of having more choices for the American farmer. The company says its eight new soybean varieties have excellent disease packages and high yields. It reports that several new varieties have excellent cyst resistance with high protein and oil. These new varieties fit well with its 33 other 0.5 RM to 3.5 RM varieties. The company is adding one new conventional soybean variety and one new organic soybean variety.

Monsanto

Monsanto says its Dekalb and Asgrow seed brands have 47 field-tested products, including eight corn seed products with the YieldGard Plus traits and seven products stacked with YieldGard Plus and Roundup Ready Corn 2 traits. In addition to the YieldGard Plus Corn products, the latest lineup from Dekalb and Asgrow includes five products containing the YieldGard Corn Borer trait and nine products containing the YieldGard Rootworm trait.

In addition, 25 new '05 Elite soybean products — 18 from Asgrow and seven from Dekalb — raise the bar on soybean performance, the company claims. Group III '05 Elite soybeans include seven high-yielding products with a range of disease resistance traits including tolerance to Phytophthora and soybean cyst nematode. According to the company, key Elite class products are Asgrow brand AG1903, AG3305, AG3602, AG3802 and AG4801 as well as Dekalb brand DKB 36-52.

Mycogen Seeds

For the 2005 growing season, Mycogen Seeds offers 20 new grain corn hybrids ranging from 80- to 115-day RM. Many of the new grain corn hybrids feature trait and seed treatment technologies, including Herculex I Insect Protection, YieldGard Plus technology, YieldGard Rootworm technology and YieldGard Corn Borer technology, Roundup Ready Corn 2 and Cruiser seed treatments. Mycogen Seeds also introduces 12 new soybean varieties ranging from .2 to 5.0 RM. The lineup includes varieties with Roundup Ready and protection against Phytophthora and sudden death syndrome.

NC+ offers 23 new corn hybrids for 2005. They include various combinations of Roundup Ready (RR), YieldGard Corn Borer and YieldGard Rootworm technologies. There are also three new conventional corn hybrids and two new white corn hybrids. New soybean offerings include one RR variety, one RR/STS variety and one conventional variety. A new red seeded grain sorghum hybrid is also included in the NC+ product lineup.

Pfister Hybrid Corn Company

Pfister introduces three new hybrids for the northern Corn Belt: 1688Bt, 2060Bt, and 2380. 2380 is a white cob, 105-day hybrid that is also adapted to the central Corn Belt. Pfister states that its 2588Bt is an extremely high-yielding hybrid that will remind growers of its top-selling hybrid 2656. 2672LL is a new high-performing, 111-day LibertyLink hybrid. Pfister also introduces stacked versions of some of its best performers: 2540RR-Bt, 3356RR-Bt. In addition, the company offers a new Superkernoil, SK2540-19.

Pioneer Hi-Bred International

Pioneer introduces approximately 55 new corn hybrids for 2005. Included will be a number of new hybrids with Herculex I Insect Protection, with European corn borer-resistant technology plus in-plant resistance to black cutworm and western bean cutworm. All products with the Herculex I technology also contain the LibertyLink gene for resistance to Liberty herbicide. Pioneer also plans to introduce additional hybrids with the YieldGard Rootworm gene, the Roundup Ready (RR) trait, and its first hybrids with YieldGard Plus. Beyond this, Pioneer advancements will likely include hybrids with stacked traits, including YieldGard Rootworm with RR, Herculex I with RR, and YieldGard Plus with RR. Final delivery and planting of the last two stacks is pending Japanese import approval.

Many Pioneer brand hybrids will be offered with a choice of insecticide seed treatments (ISTs). Options for 2005 include mid-rate Poncho 250 for control of secondary insects, and high-rate Poncho 1250, which adds protection against corn rootworm and suppression of black cutworm.

Pioneer introduces 19 new soybean varieties for 2005. The maturity for these new varieties ranges from Group 000 through Group VI. Eighteen of these new varieties contain the RR gene, and eight contain both the RR gene and soybean cyst nematode resistance. Eleven varieties also carry a multi-race Phytophthora resistance gene. And 11 of the new varieties have good tolerance to sudden death syndrome.

StaufferSeeds

StaufferSeeds introduces 18 new corn hybrids in the 90- to 114-day relative maturity range to the lineup for 2005. The new corn hybrids include triple-stacked hybrids for corn rootworm and European corn borer control stacked with Roundup herbicide tolerance. Two new Herculex products also are offered providing black cutworm and European corn borer control stacked with Liberty herbicide tolerance. Stauffer also offers customers the “Dynasty Difference” with Cruiser Extreme seed-applied insecticide available on any and all corn products Stauffer sells. StaufferSeeds will introduce 20 new Roundup Ready soybean varieties in the 1.1 to 3.9 maturity range. Varieties were chosen to yield in many environmental conditions such as soybean cyst nematode, iron deficiency chlorosis, Phytophthora, brown stem rot and white mold.

Stine Seed Company

Stine Seed Company offers 36 corn hybrids for 2005 (12 new for '05). Bred to provide unique genetics, season-long standability, and consistent yields, many Stine hybrids also feature traits such as Herculex I, YieldGard Corn Borer, YieldGard Rootworm, YieldGard Plus and Roundup Ready. In soybeans, Stine offers 40 Roundup Ready soybeans (17 new for 2005), and 16 Elite soybeans (four new for 2005). They are designed to deliver resistance to soybean cyst nematode, Phytophthora root rot, and other diseases and pests.

Syngenta Seeds has added 27 new corn hybrids, soybeans and alfalfa varieties to the NK Brand product portfolio.

To provide growers additional options, four of the 13 new NK Brand corn hybrids include YieldGard insect protection and LibertyLink technology. Four more hybrids are recommended for refuge areas and offer LibertyLink technology.

Backed by 35 years of proprietary breeding, the 13 new NK Brand soybeans underwent a rigorous screening process that identifies resistance to key pests such as soybean cyst nematode, Phytophthora root rot and iron deficiency chlorosis. According to the company, these varieties offer strong disease-resistance packages to protect yield potential and fit the Roundup Ready system.

NK Brand Seeds introduces Extra Edge corn hybrids and soybeans, which target specific end-use markets. Extra Edge corn hybrids include High Extractable Starch (HES) hybrids for markets such as high fructose corn syrup, and Dry-Grind Ethanol (DGE) hybrids for ethanol production. High Oil (HO) and High Protein (HP) soybeans comprise the Extra Edge soybean portfolio, featuring higher ranges of oil or protein.

Triton Genetics

CHS Marketing, through its Triton Genetics brand, offers seven hybrids that feature the new Herculex I Insect Protection trait. Triton Genetics is a new brand bringing corn growers the newest technology with a regional touch. Beginning in 2003, Dow AgroSciences granted CHS Marketing with its Triton Genetics brand the first rights to market Herculex I Insect Protection corn. For 2005, the newest addition to this lineup is a mid-season hybrid, 9385. Triton Genetics is available through the independent seed dealers of the Curry, Hoegemeyer and Bo-Jac seed companies.
