AmericanCowman.com: Timely, practical production and management strategies that will add efficiency, value, and profitability to cattle herds with up to 100 head.
In Wyoming County in upstate New York — the state's top dairy county — farmers are looking for good silage hybrids as well as good hybrids for grain. Tom Sheehan, president of T&S Crop Service in Warsaw, NY, is there to help.
Hybrid evaluation
Each year, T&S Crop Service coordinates on-farm field trials with the purpose of testing corn hybrid performance and invites area growers to visit and compare hybrids. Last year it planted about a dozen silage hybrids and collected data about them.
The full-service ag retailer also works with NK Brand Syngenta Seeds and Seedway to select and offer hybrids that not only yield well, but also produce highly digestible silage. In addition to seed corn, the New York retailer offers NK Brand, Seedway and America's Alfalfa seed products.
Established in 1980, T&S Crop Service offers seed, fertilizer and crop protection products and custom application services to farmers within a 70-mile radius of Warsaw, near Geneseo, NY. The company has always sold seed, but Sheehan has concentrated on it more in the last three years as more defensive traits and value have moved into seed. At the same time, the company has increased seed sales substantially with more aggressive selling efforts.
Good relationships
Keith Walters, field sales manager for NK Brand Syngenta Seeds, attributes T&S Crop Service's sales growth to Sheehan's strong people skills and follow-up. “Tom has very good relationships with his customers,” Walters says. He also says the company's custom application business is a good tie-in with seed.
In turn, Sheehan says that he has a good relationship with his seed company representatives, adding that he sold NK Brand seeds from the start.
A strong track record with both customers and suppliers is an important factor in the seed business, as are services providing customers with additional value. Sheehan often helps match up buyers and sellers of silage corn, for example. His company also offers seed delivery to busy farmers. In addition to holding field days in the summer, T&S Crop Service generally holds an informational meeting in March where growers can earn pesticide application points.
Keeping up with advanced genetic traits is probably the company's greatest challenge, Sheehan says. But he knows that to maintain strong relationships with his customers (and to increase sales) this is an essential job in the seed business.
