Tell us about your experience with Syngenta Crop Protection in Latin America and what that experience will mean to your new position here in North America.

Agriculture in Latin America is very diversified in terms of the types of crops, the size and scope of the farms, and the business dynamics across the 35 different countries in the region. It is very challenging from the standpoint of managing a large agribusiness, and, to be successful, we learned to serve the needs of each individual customer. That experience will be valuable as we grow the Syngenta North America business by continuing to seek new and better ways to serve our many customers here.

Ag retailers continue to face challenges with profitability because of reduced margins from sales of traditional crop protection products. How is Syngenta positioning itself with retailers to be the manufacturer of choice?

We are pursuing several avenues for building more value for retailers, and they all start with building more value for growers. First and foremost, we're investing heavily in research and development to find better product options and more effective agronomic programs to help farmers increase their yields and maximize profits. We believe agriculture is an industry that will continue to reward innovation. If we introduce products that add value for growers and our retail partners use them to help solve their customers' unique problems, we'll all benefit.

What crop protection products are you most excited about for retailers and their relationships with their growers/customers?

We have several exciting new products we're bringing to market this year. In herbicides, we're introducing Lexar from the mesotrione chemistry family for one-pass, broad-spectrum weed control in corn. Sequence is another exciting product for the cotton and soybean markets. Sequence combines two active ingredients to give better control in glyphosate-tolerant crops than what glyphosate alone provides and also helps manage against weed resistance. Finally, we are excited about our new fungicide/insecticide seed treatment products, including Cruiser Extreme Pak for corn and CruiserMaxx Pak for soybeans.

A major issue in 2005 will be responding to soybean rust in the U.S. Syngenta has significant experience managing rust in Latin America, and I've seen firsthand how the disease can be controlled. We intend to work closely with our retail partners to help manage the disease. We have Quadris fungicide registered for rust, and Tilt is registered in some states under Section 18 approval. We've applied for registration for Quilt fungicide, a product that combines those two chemistries, because a combination of preventive and curative chemistries seems to be most effective. Finally, we are applying for full registration for Quadris Xtra, a unique new chemistry combination proven to be the most effective option on rust in Latin America. We will support requests for Section 18 approvals for that product this growing season, if necessary.

Many people in the industry argue that retailers are becoming either cash-and-carry or full-service providers. How does Syngenta deal with that dynamic?

We try to respond to the unique needs of each of our channel partners and have evolved our support programs in recent years to be as flexible as possible. We recently realigned our business units and Corporate Alliance group (our employees who work with large distribution and retail customers) to better serve key customers. We've expanded our Customer Resource Center to increase responsiveness and customer service.

Moving forward, we see issues such as glyphosate-resistant weeds and soybean rust challenging growers' management skills. As the primary source of local agronomic expertise and services for growers, ag retailers will continue to provide value and stay intimately involved in the supply chain. Despite the challenges, the U.S. ag economy should hold its own for the next few years. Prospects are good for retailers and manufacturers who give growers the answers and the options they need to be competitive.

Valdemar Fischer was named president of Syngenta Crop Protection Inc. in January 2005, building on a 20-year career in the crop protection business. He most recently was head of Syngenta Latin America.
