Weed control in small grains

Feb 1, 2006 12:00 PM

TWO NEW broadleaf weed herbicides geared to wheat and other small grains will be available for growers this spring. CleanWave and Starane NXTcp herbicides from Dow AgroSciences recently received EPA registration. CleanWave is designed as a broad-spectrum herbicide for wheat growers in the Western Plains where continuous wheat and wheat-fallow systems are popular. Starane NXTcp is a niche product directed at the Northern Plains where growers may want to rotate to any crop the next year.

CleanWave is a premix herbicide of aminopyralid, a new active ingredient, and fluroxypyr and controls more than 30 broadleaf weeds. Dow is seeking registrations in Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota for 2006 and will add more in 2007.

Starane NXTcp contains fluroxypyr and bromoxynil and will be offered as a co-pack this year. It provides control of annual broadleaf weeds such as kochia, wild buckwheat, lambsquarter and Russian thistle. State registrations are being sought for Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
