2004: What's new in corn insecticides Feb 1, 2004 12:00 PM Bayer CropScience Contact: 919/549-2000 Dow AgroSciences Contact: 317/337-7637 New for 2004: EPA has approved registration of Intrepid 2F insecticide for control of lepidopteran pests in field and sweet corn. Monsanto Company Contact: 314/694-4724 New for 2004: YieldGard Rootworm: The 2003 crop year marked the introduction of YieldGard Rootworm, the first biotech crop designed to target the corn rootworm pest. In 2004 YieldGard Rootworm hybrids will be offered through both Monsanto seed brands, DeKalb and Asgrow, as well as through licensed, independent seed companies. YieldGard Rootworm corn contains a gene from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). All YieldGard Rootworm corn hybrids will be sold with a seed treatment to offer broad-spectrum control of secondary insect pests such as wireworm, white grub, early flea beetle, and seed corn maggot. Yieldgard Plus: Following the receipt of Japanese import approval, Monsanto is expected to launch YieldGard Plus technology in 2004. Introduction of this technology will make Monsanto the first company with a stacked insect-protected trait technology for corn in the U.S. market. YieldGard Plus corn provides growers with in-seed protection, allowing the corn plant to protect itself against the damaging Western and Northern corn rootworm larvae and the European corn borer. YieldGard Plus corn joins Monsanto's YieldGard family of insect-protected products for corn, which includes YieldGard Corn Borer and YieldGard Rootworm corn. Following the necessary regulatory clearances, YieldGard Plus technology will be made available in corn hybrids through Monsanto seed brands, DeKalb and Asgrow, and through licensed, independent seed companies. All YieldGard Plus corn hybrids will be sold with a seed treatment. Syngenta Crop Protection Contact: 336/632-6000 New for 2004: Cruiser Extreme Pak offers an insecticide/fungicide combination that will make it widely available this year. Cruiser was registered in the fall 2003, too late for many seed companies to work it into their treatment plans. But it will be available in 2004 with the Cruiser Extreme Pak and Cruiser Extreme Pak BB/CRW, which contain the active ingredient in Cruiser, plus three fungicides: Dynasty, Maxim XL and Apron XL. Cruiser Extreme Pak contains an insecticide rate needed to control early-season pests. As its name implies, Cruiser Extreme Pak BB/CRW has a higher insecticide rate, which adds control of billbug and corn rootworm. The Cruiser products will largely replace Force ST seed treatment from Syngenta Seeds, which will be phased out after this year. |
